Decker's family relocated out of Louisiana and into Georgia during the summer of 1995. She began writing songs, and was regularly going to Nashville to look for a record deal. Her songs were being offered to record labels and other artists by an agent from Big Yellow Dog Records agent in her teens. The moment Mercury Records president David Massey heard Decker's demos he passed them along to L.A. Reid head of the associated Island/Def Jam label group and Reid agreed to sign her up for a record deal. Jessie James' first album, titled Jessie James and released in August 2009, was her self-titled debut. Decker was disappointed by two further singles from the album, fought the executives of the record label in search of more control. Decker then released her second single Boys in the Summer which was more than a country track. The second album of Decker, dubbed in the form of Daughter of a Gypsy and Sweet American Dreams by Mercury Records was shelved after Mercury was disappointed by the results of three of the singles on country radio charts.
